As those of you who have met me in real life or been following this blog for some time might recall, I’m a huge nerd. One of the many facets of my nerdliness is a deep and abiding love for the television show Battlestar Galactica. I have exponentially increased the nerd factor of my love for this show by combining it with competitive knitting.
You heard me.
There is a group on Ravelry of like-minded individuals where I post projects that fit the parameters of certain challenges. I have to finish the projects within a specific time frame, and I spend lots of time on the boards chatting with other BSG knitters and saying things like “frak” and “bring in the cat.” It’s great fun.
So imagine my glee when, after deciding to return to this knitting game after a prolonged hiatus, I discovered another nerdy knitting competition entitled “Nerd Wars.” You sign up for a team representing a specific brand of geekery, and complete challenges in similar fashion as the first game I mentioned. The two competitions, being nice sorts of people, have no prejudice against using the same projects for both games’ challenges.
Game on, say I.
So this month, I find myself happily occupied with crafting item after item to earn points for my teams (in the Battlestar-only game, I represent the cylon basestar; in Nerd Wars, Team Viper). So far, I have completed this:
And this:
I’ve also got grand plans to crochet some granny squares for a charity afghan project benefiting victims of the Queensland flooding, finish another pair of languishing socks, make the Avatar beanie my friend Miguel commissioned ages ago, and even knit a sweater as part of a longer three-month challenge. Thanks to my competitive streak and burgeoning yarn stash, there is a lot of knitting in my future right now. And oh yeah! Before I even “allowed” myself to start game-related knitting, I finished these:
In other news, we took a trip to Philadelphia this weekend to visit/care for our friend Leif, who recently had surgery on his back and was in need of some cheering up. We took in the Barnes Collection and Pierogi Week, the weather was obliging for the most part, and it was a grand old time. Superbowl Sunday was low-key. I made a big dinner of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, green beans, and sweet tea, and we had some friends/neighbors over to relax and observe the game since none of us were really rooting for either the Steelers or the Packers. Tonight should be a thrill, since we’re going to see one of our all-time favorite bands in concert: Huey Lewis and the News. The thought of hearing “Hip to Be Square” played live is really just awesome. I can’t wait. In the meantime, there’s a lot of knitting I can be doing.
Happy Wednesday!
