Notes From Neptune

I write about people, places, and things.

Crap. Now I really want to knit Alot.

No, that isn’t poor grammar.  It’s this (link).  Which I enjoyed in a purely appreciative, fellow grammar-fascist sort of way. Until this (another link).  Now I just want to squeeze it. And since she’s not selling, I need to get my fix some other way. Bulky brown alpaca handspun?  Check.  Yarn that looks like fur? Maybe check. Felt and fabric bits to use as trimmings? Check. All-consuming obsessive desire to.. Read More

Sewing. We meet again.

Emily from over here at The Family Trunk Project (link) is ruining my life. I too would like to make sweet, fluttery spring dresses perfect for eating ice cream on the Pont Neuf with a handsome gentleman with rolled-up shirtsleeves and a wicked smile.  And while I have the gentleman (who has the shirtsleeves and the smile), ice cream is readily available, and could even obtain the passage to Paris with.. Beef and barley soup

Awhile ago, our friends Corey and Rose gave us a pretty hefty bag of stew beef that they couldn’t use.  They’d bought a share of a grass-fed cow that had recently been butchered, and they were awash in meat.  Which sounds a little odd now that I’ve typed it out. The first two outings of this beef were in iterations of the Persian dish gormeh sabzi, which is a delicious,.. Read More

Chicken Noodle Soup

I spent a little time with the Ji last night after quite a hiatus, and (as usual), her mom had left instructions on what should be used up for dinner. Now usually Ellen just leaves me a list of the raw ingredients and leaves me to my own devices when it comes to their combination and service thereof.  Occasionally she will request a certain dish, but there’s still usually a.. Ploppers!

More snow. But hey, the city did get the whole cleanup thing together in much shorter order this time around.  So much so that all the Twitter and Facebook comments of my fellow denizens regarding Snowpocalypse 2011 skew in the “well, the sequel isn’t as great as the first one” direction. Whatever.  Snow pretty!  Until it’s run over by lots and lots of trucks and toileted upon by lots and.. Read More

Let the socks begin!

Well, I’ve done it.  I’ve started the Self-Imposed Sock Club 2011 storm o’ knitting. The pattern is Mingus, by Cookie A (here).  I thought it most appropriate to start the year off with a Cookie pattern, since it was her new club that got me on this track in the first place.  This picture does nothing for the color of the yarn, a wonderful Sundara creation called “Bronzed Forest.”  It’s.. A gap of days…

I really wanted to be good this year and try to post a little something every day if I could, or at least only let a day or two go empty between posts. Sigh.  That’s what comes of grand intentions, I suppose. I do at least have a plausible excuse.  Mr. Boyfriend came down with some type of flu-thing on New Year’s Day, and I, of course, had to tag.. Happy New Year!

Well, it’s the first day of a brand new year, and I’m going to kick it off with… stuff from before Christmas. I had meant ages ago to post a sort of photo-illustrated entry on how to make “The A-hole Cookies,” as my mother so lovingly calls the plain white cookies with icing that we have made and cut for Christmas as long as I can really remember.  The tradition..
