Notes From Neptune

I write about people, places, and things.

Finished – Atelier Smock Sweater

It is finished. Well, it was actually finished ten days ago, but who’s counting?  I apologize for the ever-so-casual self-snapshot, but until I grow some real friends, it can be rather difficult to find someone to play photographer for me (at least during daylight hours). The self-snap does at least show the final version of the massive color differences in the skeins of this yarn.  Look there, right under my.. Read More

A chance to do good while you help yourself

Calling all NYC-area knitters: You’ve probably heard that things aren’t so great right now in Japan. Japan is the country where Noro yarn comes from. We have a lot of Noro yarn at my store (link). From now until the end of March, we’re offering all our Noro yarn at 20% off.  This is to encourage you to buy a lot of it. We want you to buy a lot.. Read More

An inauspicious start

Last week did not begin as smoothly as some. I burned the ever-loving crap out of my left hand making braised pork roast Monday night.  I had a huge orange blister on my ring finger, which has since subsided into a gaping pit of raw skin and pain. Luckily, it doesn’t prohibit knitting entirely, but did slow it down quite a bit at first. As a result, I did not.. Read More

The One That Got Away

I feel like everyone who engages in some kind of handcraft has this project.  In fact, I’d warrant most of us have several. The Project That Got Away. In a manner of speaking, anyway.  It’s that project that just didn’t turn out quite right, despite the fact that you felt the whole time you were making it that you were making good design decisions and were generally on the right.. My love/hate relationship with hand-dyed yarns

Hand-dyed yarns are one of my greatest weaknesses.  Sundara Yarn and madelinetosh have probably been out to some really lavish dinners on my dime, and as long as they keep feeding my my subtle-hued fiber fascinations, I’m totally okay with that. It’s only recently that I’ve been brave enough to use these hand-dyed beauties in garments more expansive than a shawlette or a pair of socks.  Once you stray into.. Read More

Nerd Wars Round 1 Recap

Yeah, it’s really called that. So here be the gauntlet of things finished this month as competitive knitting awesomeness:     These projects were all double-dipped between my separate games.  I finished all the ready rooms for BSGFPB (a couple twice!), and all but one challenge for Nerd Wars. In true me fashion, I have let this anomaly of preparedness and work ethic completely overcome me, and I have therefore.. Read More

Spring is here.

No matter what the silly temperature gauge says, and I know this because of asparagus. That’s right.  Asparagus season is upon us, and this early harbinger of fresh green things is probably one of my favorite vegetables, despite the rather potent effect it has on the kidneys.  My favorite is asparagus sautéed with a little butter and dressed with a scraping of salty-sweet parmesan cheese, but sometimes one must branch..
